The Kenyan shilling, KES, is the national currency of the Republic of Kenya, located in East Africa. It was put into circulation on September 14, 1966, replacing the East African shilling shortly after the country gained independence from Great Britain. The issuer of the currency is the Central Bank of Kenya.

The Kenyan shilling can be exchanged for 100 cents, coins less than one shilling are practically not used. In Kenya, coins are accepted in denominations of 50 cents, 40, 20, 10, 5, 1 shillings and banknotes worth 1,000, 500, 200, 100 and 50 shillings.
